More than 20,000 people jammed downtown Jerusalem Monday evening to pray for divine intervention against the proposed plan to dismantle 25 Jewish communities in Gush Katif and northern Samaria.

Shofars and trumpets accompanied prayers and psalms that echoed beyond Zion Square at Jaffa and Ben Yehuda streets. Men, women and students from throughout the country joined to hear Rabbis Mordechai Eliyahu and Avraham Shapira, former chief rabbis of Israel, appeal for an end to the idea of forcing Jews out of their homes and unilaterally giving the areas to the Palestinian Authority.

One middle-aged man, who identified himself as Eli, said, “Thank G-d there were no politicians” at the prayer rally. Leading rabbis from around the country, including Hassidic leaders, joined the throng.
