Dan (ben Malka) Amiel, the 20-year-old father who was wounded by a mortar shell blast yesterday morning, continues to be listed in serious condition. He had just walked out of the synagogue in Kfar Darom, still wearing his tefillin, when the shell hit. Kfar Darom spokesman Asher Mivtzari said that Dan lost much blood after
sustaining shrapnel wounds in his arms, legs and stomach area - and when he arrived at the hospital, a shell fragment was even found to be lodged in his head tefillin. "Even in the midst of tragedy," Mivtzari said, "we see the Divine intervention - not to mention what could have happened if the shell had actually hit the synagogue." It is possible that the wounds might cause irreparable damage to Dan's leg, and that it might have to be amputated.
As if the barrage of almost 20 mortar shells at Kfar Darom and Gush Katif Saturday night and Sunday morning was not enough, a three-man terrorist cell was sighted making its way towards Kfar Darom yesterday evening. Army forces opened fire and killed two of them, though the third one escaped.
IDF forces operating south of Shechem in the Shomron today caught a 13-year-old boy carrying a large bomb in his school bag. He was taken for questioning, while IDF sappers neutralized the bomb. It is believed that terrorists used the boy to transport the explosive, in the belief that the soldiers might not check him.
