In an article that completely ignores the reality of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plans to uproot Jews from Gaza and Samaria, the Egyptian Al-Gomhuriya newspaper commented (Oct. 11) that "settlement schemes are the main motive for Sharon's bloody policy in the Palestinian territories, as he thinks that military force alone can suppress the Palestinian people and compel them to surrender; so that the Israeli settlers can go on freely in the West Bank and Gaza." Sharon's objective, the newspaper declared, is "settling the Jews of the whole world in Israel and the occupied Arab territories."
Believing its own propaganda, so to speak, the Egyptian newspaper encouraged continued support for terrorism and manipulation of world public opinion: "In fact, such a bloody policy can never be brought to an end except through boosting the Palestinian resistance. This is in addition to unifying the Arab powers and making the international community believe that the fair solutions to the peoples' liberation issues are necessary in order to achieve security and stability in the whole world."
In an editorial just the day before, however, the same newspaper, Al-Gomhuriya, declared that Israel's Operation "Days of Penitence" in Gaza is actually designed to "subjugate [Palestinian will] so as to pass his latest devilish intrigue, entitled 'pullout from Gaza strip'!" What is the substance of the "devilish intrigue" according to the Egyptian editors? "Sharon intends on the spot to burn out Gaza while annexing the West Bank and Jerusalem to Israel. Let Palestinians go to hell!"
Meanwhile, the leading Egyptian newspaper, Al-Ahram, called Operation "Days of Penitence" (Oct. 9) "racial massacres committed by Israel against the Palestinians." The counter-terrorism operation was further termed "Israeli massacres against the unarmed Palestinian people" by the editorial, which lamented the "obvious inability of the Security Council to protect an Arab people that faces ethnic genocide for many years."
The IDF operation, the newspaper editorial warned, "will not affect the Palestinian people alone, but rather will affect all parties, especially those who believe this is the opportune moment to commit big crimes under the cover of the current international darkness."
This "darkness" is manifest, the Egyptian newspaper said, in the American veto in the United Nations preventing the adoption of an anti-Israel draft-resolution. "While the Security Council rushes to issue binding resolutions regarding Syria, Lebanon and Darfur, it remains short of adopting any resolution when it comes to Israel," the Al-Ahram editors pointed out.
