Egypt Monday arrested five Egyptians in connection with the devastating October 7 attack on the Taba Hilton that killed 34 people, including 12 Israelis. Egypt also said two of the terrorists died from their own timed explosives that went off prematurely while they tried to flee the scene, and that two other terrorists escaped.

A statement from the interior ministry reported that one of the dead was the mastermind behind the terrorist strike. The two were identified following a DNA test. It added that the suspects and one of the dead are residents of Sinai and that the mastermind was a criminal who had turned to “religious fanaticism.”

One wing of the Hilton collapsed in the attack and two other blasts occurred at nearby campgrounds. Israeli tourists had packed the area despite warnings from the Israeli government to stay away from the area because of information that terrorists were plotting an attack.

The five were accused of supplying explosives and vehicles.
