A top Hamas terrorist was killed in a targeted Israel Air Force attack in Gaza last night. An IAF helicopter placed a car carrying two passengers in northern Gaza in its sights, and fired two missiles. Killed on the spot were Adnan Al-Ghol, deputy Hamas commander in Gaza, and his accomplice Imad Abbas. Both of them have been wanted for several years.
In response, as of this morning, the terrorists have fired close to 30 mortar shells on the Jewish towns in Gaza - mostly N'vei Dekalim. No one has been physically hurt, but several people are suffering from shock, and damage has been caused to at least four homes. Netzarim and Kfar Darom have also been targeted in the mortar attacks. Two terrorists in the barrage - they fired mortar shells at N'vei Dekalim last night - were killed by IDF tank fire.
The total number of rockets and mortar shells that have been fired at Jewish targets in the southern coast region now stands at 4,621. A petition calling on the government of Israel to "put an immediate end to this shameful phenomenon of Israeli communities being bombed without an appropriate response" has been put online by residents of Gush Katif. Al-Ghol was a major figure in the manufacture of the deadly Kassam rockets, and was cut down in the midst of working on new anti-tank and anti-aircraft weaponry. He prepared the explosives used in the Beit Lid massacre near Netanya in January 1995 (22 killed) and the terrorist bombing in Tel Aviv a year later (13 killed). An attempt similar to last night's to kill Al-Ghol three years ago failed, though his son was killed.
The second dead terrorist, Abbas, was involved in the June 1992 double murder of Moshe Benno and Ami Zaltzman in central Gaza, and was a central figure in producing weapons and planning terror attacks.
