The Knesset Finance Committee Tuesday demanded that security officials explain bulging costs in protecting former Primer Minister Ehud Barak when he travels to foreign countries.

Both opposition and coalition MKs criticized finance ministry requests for additional tens of thousands of dollars for personal body guards for Barak.

“There is no arrangement with Barak that he distinguish between personal and business trips and those which are governmental,” finance department officials told Labor Party MK Yitzchak Herzog, a member of the committee.

National Religious Party MK Nissan Slomiansky said, “The government is financing personal security for Barak while he is making money outside the country. He should pay his share of the costs.”
