Making good on his pledge to clamp down on traffic safety, Police Commissioner Moshe Karadi has discharged Southern District Traffic Police Superintendent David Gez from his position. Karadi made the decision after he personally witnessed Gez speeding on the Cross-Israel Highway. Supt. Gez was driving 140 kph (87 mph) - and passed the vehicle of none other than Karadi himself in the process. Army Radio reported today that another senior police officer was recently ticketed for driving 120 kph (75 mph) on the shoulder of a road/highway, past a traffic jam. He explained that he wished to see what was causing the delay.

In other traffic news, former MK Nechama Ronen (formerly of the Tzomet, Center and Likud parties), was moderately injured two days ago when a car hit hers on a Galilee highway. Suffering from several injuries and difficulty in breathing, she has been placed on a respirator. Her husband was also hurt.
