The ministerial legislative committee voted yesterday against holding a national referendum on the issue of the disengagement. This means that the government's official position will be to oppose a referendum. However, calls for a recount have already been heard. Finance Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who has expressed support for a referendum, was not present at the vote - but voted in absentia, and said he was told that his vote would be counted. His "yea" vote, if counted, would turn the tables on the results.

MK Gila Finkelstein of the NRP said that a new vote must be held. "The Prime Minister's Office did not use Yom Kippur for introspection. It's unacceptable that the votes of those who oppose his destructive policies should mysteriously and undemocratically disappear." Netanyahu said that he hopes that his missing vote will be taken into account at the next Cabinet meeting.
