Almost three days after the massive terror attacks in Sinai - at the Taba Hilton, just past Eilat, and Ras a-Sutan, further south - the precise extent of the casualties is still unclear. The latest figures say that 33 people were killed, with several Israelis and six foreign tourists still listed as missing. Six Egyptian citizens are listed among the dead, and Russian and Italian tourists are also apparently among the casualties. The names of 12 Israelis killed in the attack, including two Arabs, have been released thus far:
Valery Segal, 49; he is from Ashdod
Tzila Niv, and her two sons, Gilad, 11, and Lior, 3, of Rakefet in the Galilee
Einat Naor, 27, from Kibbutz Zikkim, just north of Gaza
Michal Alexander, 27, Ganei Tikvah, a secretary in the Prime Minister's Office - killed in Ras a-Sutan
Ro'i Aviasaf, 28, Kfar Saba - killed in Ras a-Sutan
Assaf Greenvald, 27, Ramat Gan - killed when he briefly entered the Taba Hilton
Oleg Pazakov, 32, and his wife Ludmila, 30, of Bat Yam. They were on their first vacation alone, and are survived by at least two children.
Halil Zeitouna, 10, Jaffa
Hafez Hafi, 39, Lod
The search-and-rescue operations in the rubble of the western wing of the hotel - rubble that reaches five stories high - continue this morning, but are expected to end this afternoon.
Families in Israel who have reported missing relatives or whose relatives were in Taba at the time of the attack have been asked to submit DNA material. The tissues will enable the identification of the bodies, which have been crushed or destroyed beyond recognition. DNA has similarly been taken from the victims, and transferred to Israel for comparison. Once identified as Israeli, the bodies will be transferred to Israel - although it is not clear when.
Seventeen wounded victims are still hospitalized in Israel, including one in serious condition in Soroka Hospital in Be'er Sheva: Yaron ben [son of] Esther. In addition, two people are still hospitalized in light condition in Yoseftal Hospital in Eilat, and six in Tel HaShomer.
Israeli security bodies estimate that the explosives used in the car bomb or bombs in Taba totaled 300 kilograms, and that the terrorists' intention was to destroy the entire 410-room hotel. Some 300 Egyptian employees were in the hotel at the time, as well as 200 Russian tourists, and 400 other tourists - most of whom were Israeli. The British Sunday Telegraph reports today that a female terrorist also took part in the attack, and that her decapitated body was found near the pool at the back of the hotel - together with several other dead bodies.
