The tragic events cause the people of Israel to lose faith in the Palestinian leadership and its ability and desire to make peace. Their leadership displays neither the will nor the ability to enforce public order and discipline. This causes a decline in the relationship between the two people... The policy of restraint will not last forever. We have to first of all secure the security and well-being of Israelis.\"
Minister of Public Security and Foreign Secretary Shlomo Ben-Ami called for enlisting soldiers to help the police: \"The situation in the Palestinian Authority is close to anarchy and total loss of control.\" Ben-Ami called for reinforcement of the police by adding IDF soldiers to their ranks: \"The police with its present manpower cannot fulfill all of the tasks put before it. The police cannot deal with crime and security at the same time.\"
Ephraim Sneh, who will leave his post as Deputy Defense Minister upon the formation of the new government and become Transportation Minister, said that he does not rule out Israeli military action within Palestinian-controlled areas.
