Avigdor Lieberman, the head of the National Union opposition party, told IDF Radio today that Israel is certainly heading for early elections, explaining that in his view, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's years in office have been a colossal failure.
Lieberman had only harsh words for Sharon's leadership, adding that the only sphere of government where he may boast accomplishments is the economic one; however, explained Lieberman, this is due to the policies of Finance Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, not the prime minister. Lieberman stated that Sharon has failed to end the Oslo War as promised, failed to bring security as promised and now faces a situation considerably worse than when he assumed office.
In Lieberman's view, there is no alternative to early elections, since Sharon cannot muster a stable government coalition and he cannot continue limping along seeking to muster support for issues as they are addressed.
Lieberman and party colleague MK Binyamin Elon were fired from the cabinet by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in a move to ensure a cabinet majority in favor of the Gaza "Disengagement Plan". The firing of the ministers led to the National Union resigning from the coalition and moving to the opposition. Lieberman, who continues serving as the party head, is not a member of Knesset.
The former minister sees a need for a new party that will offer a viable alternative, stressing something new and different is demanded - a platform that offers true solutions. He emphasized that it is not a matter of "left-wing or right-wing", but more importantly, such a party would address the dire situation that faces the country on many fronts.
Regarding reported meetings with National Religious Party leader MK Effie Eitam towards establishing a new alternative front, Lieberman stated this is not news, adding that he already broached the subject with Eitam ahead of the last elections and there was no major progress to report.
Lieberman stated that the two leading parties, Likud and Labor, have both failed miserably and do not have anything to offer voters. Opposition leader Knesset Member Shimon Peres, he said, carries personal responsibility for the cataclysms of Oslo, and therefore cannot be considered a candidate who will deliver the required change to extricate the country out of the crisis situation. However, Lieberman added that he agrees totally with the analogy made today by Peres that following the American presidential elections next month, pressure will be exerted on Israel by the White House and the other Quartet nations - the European Union, Russia and the United Nations.
