Rabbi Shlomo Aviner - one of two Chief Rabbis of Beit El, Dean of Yeshivat Ateret Cohanim in the Old City of Jerusalem, and a prolific and leading rabbinical spokesman of the religious Zionist camp - says today that he no longer supports the NRP. In a letter to NRP "loyalists," Rabbi Aviner wrote, "In light of the party's continued support for the government that is taking concrete steps to actualize the evil 'uprooting' program, I hereby announce my immediate resignation from the party, which is betraying the supreme and sacred ideal of the revival of the Nation in its Land according to the light of Torah."
Another religious-Zionist leader, Kiryat Shmonah's Chief Rabbi Tzephaniah Drori recently supported the NRP. He said that the politicians must be allowed to do their work, and "rabbis need not be involved at every stage. The rabbis must set the course and the values, but the day-to-day war should be left to those who live the day-to-day."
