Finance Minister Binyamin Netanyahu recommends once again that a national referendum be held on the issue of the unilateral withdrawal from Gush Katif and northern Shomron. He told the Yediot Acharonot newspaper that such a vote would "prevent a conflagration and a fissure in the nation. If we don't do it, we'll ask ourselves later why not." Netanyahu said that the danger of an internal conflict has intensified over the past several months.
Regarding the disengagement plan itself, the former Prime Minister said that he himself would not have initiated such a plan, "as it could be construed as running away - but it's a legitimate plan." The unilateral nature of the withdrawal means, by definition, that we won't receive anything in return, Netanyahu noted.
