Security elements say that the intensive attacks against Gush Katif over the past few days and weeks are part of the terrorists' plan to intensify the pressure on the residents and the IDF forces as the holidays approach. National Religious Party Chairman MK Effie Eitam said last week that the continuing terrorism "proves that all the ideas of disengagement are not practical, and in fact give a supportive wind to terrorism."
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said, at the most recent Cabinet meeting, that he has instructed the IDF to prepare for a withdrawal from Gaza "under fire." He said that the IDF must respond immediately to any Arab fire at Israelis during the implementation of the disengagement, even if the source of fire is within civilian areas - though they must be warned first.
MK Aryeh Eldad (National Union) said, "Sharon is preparing excuses for himself, in the knowledge that the disengagement will just increase the terrorism. That's why he is now saying that we must prepare for a retreat under fire, after promising in the past that such a situation would never arise."
IDF sources said today that it is now clear that, contrary to Sharon's plans, the withdrawal - if there is one - will take place under fire.
****The Arutz-7 staff prays that this Yom Kippur truly be a "day of friendship and love," as we recite in the Yom Kippur prayers. May it herald the beginning of a year of fortitude against those who wish to harm us, as well as one of true peace and growth, personally and nationally. May the Nation of Israel overcome all difficulties, retain in entirety its legacy of Torah, Land and Nation, and emerge all the stronger from the many challenges we face.
