The internal Labor Party elections for party head may be postponed. Some 170 Labor members have signed a petition calling for the elections to be pushed off from their early September date. Party officials will meet today to discuss the proposal. Both candidates in the election, Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer and Knesset Speaker Avraham Burg, say they are against a postponement, but Ben-Eliezer is rumored to be an unseen driving force behind the initiative, together with Shimon Peres. Many leading party MKs are against a postponement, while others say that the time is not ripe for a change.
