A woman terrorist detonated explosives on her body at the crowded French Hill junction in northern Jerusalem shortly after 4:00 this afternoon, murdering two people. 16 others were lightly wounded and taken for medical treatment.

The terrorist, who apparently came from the Palestinian Authority-controlled areas near Ramallah, detonated herself at a place where many residents of communities north of Jerusalem wait for buses or other rides home. However, the deployment of Border Guard forces in the area - the result of serious terrorist attacks in the past - prevented a much worse attack. A Border Guard policeman suspected the terrorist and did not allow her to board a bus. The Palestinian Al-Aksa terrorist organization claimed responsibility for the attack.

Jerusalem police forces have been on heightened alert since last night, in light of intelligence warnings of a possible terrorist attack. Today's attack was not related to these warnings, however.
