Israeli Itzhak Mamistalov won the gold medal at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens on Tuesday, coming in first in the men's 100 meter freestyle S1. Mamistalov's medal is Israel's first Gold medal this year. He also set a new Paralympic record time for the 100 meter freestyle.
Israeli swimmer Keren Leibowitz won the silver medal in the women's 100-meter freestyle S8 category of the 2004 Paralympic Games Monday.
Leibowitz raced against American Jessica Long who pulled ahead of Leibowitz at the very end of the race, beating her by 19/100 of a second. Two years ago, in the Sydney Paralympics, Leibowitz won three gold medals and broke three world-records.
Other Israeli winners include Inbal Pezaro, who took the bronze in the women's 200m freestyle S5 and Doron Shaziri, who won a bronze medal in the men's free rifle contest. Nimrod Tzabiran placed sixth in the men's 100-meter freestyle final in the S8 category.
The Paralympics are not to be confused with the Special Olympics, for athletes with mental retardation. The Special Olympics are a year-round program that emphasizes the benefits of training along with competition at the local, area, state and International levels.
The Paralympic Games are a biennial event for elite athletes with any disability. They follow the Olympic Games every two years, with both summer and winter Games. The Paralympics 2004 has more than 4000 disabled athletes from 136 countries competing for 525 gold medals in 19 sports.
