The Tel Aviv Magistrates Court found the three largest news publishing companies in Israel - Yediot Acharonot, Schocken, and Maariv - guilty of multiple counts of publishing lewd ads. Managers in the companies were found responsible as well. One newspaper was found guilty on 30 counts, while another one was cited for well over 200.
In November 1998, the Knesset passed a law, introduced by then-Law Committee Chairman Chanan Porat, mandating up to a six-month prison term for those who publish such ads anywhere other than in a special section available only upon request.
