The good guy/bad guy routine in the Palestinian Authority may be coming to an end. While traditionally Hamas and Islamic Jihad have been steadfast in their adherence to terrorism against Israel, and the PA has generally been the one tasked with "condemning" attacks and even expected to "fight" the same terrorism it clandestinely approved, the latter has now apparently joined forces with the former. Ahmed Qurei, the prime minister of the PA, said yesterday that Hamas would be "justified" in retaliating harshly against Israel following the Israel Air Force strike early Tuesday morning. Israeli aircraft bombed a group of terrorists in Gaza who were in the midst of training for terrorist actions, killing 15.
"There is no crime without results," Abu Ala said. "This crime will have results, and they will be justified. Any Palestinian reaction will be justified. Sharon understands only force."
Abu Ala is also in the news for having submitted his resignation, once again, to Yasser Arafat yesterday. The two reportedly had a dispute over reforms in the PA, and Arafat reprimanded Qurei in front of others. Most recently, Qurei resigned three weeks ago, but later retracted. Qurei has not yet submitted an official resignation letter, but "this time, it's final," he said.
