A UN Security Council resolution Thursday, which called for the withdrawal of all foreign forces from Lebanon, was touted as a strong rebuke of Syria’s military occupation of Lebanon. According to Islam Online, though, Syria claims that the resolution is also aimed at forcing Israel to withdraw from the Har Dov region – an area Syrian-backed Hizbullah terrorists have been claiming.
"Countries pushing for the adoption of the resolution failed to include Syria by name, which also means the pullout of Israeli occupation forces from the southern Lebanese Shebaa Farms [Har Dov –ed.]," a high level Syrian official told Islam Online on condition of anonymity.
"Positively enough, the US-French sponsored resolution failed to name the Syrian forces in Lebanon or define certain actions in case it does not come into action," he said.
He argued the Syrian troops have been stationed in Lebanon upon the approval of the United States. "The Syrian forces in Lebanon are not occupying troops, but rather they are in Lebanon upon an official request and with an American approval," he said.
Other “well-placed Syrian sources” told Islam Online that the UN resolution “might be the first part of a scenario designated to solving all suspending issues in the region,” including Israel’s complete withdrawal from the Golan Heights.
