An editorial of Al-Gomhuriya newspaper out of Cairo, Egypt, this week (August 30) claimed that when it comes to Israel, the United States is all talk.
Furthermore, the Egyptian editorial seems to imply that Israel denying terrorists an expanded cable television package is an "inhumane crime", but the bizarre and extreme humiliations meted out at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq by American troops were "mistakes".
In the wake of news of the ongoing hunger strike by Arab terrorist prisoners in Israeli jails, Al-Gomhuriya reported, "The US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage said the US administration would hold talks with the Israeli officials over the treatment of the Palestinian prisoners in the Israeli jails. Armitage, however, doubted the number of the hunger strikers saying they are just hundreds depending on what he called press reports."
The Egyptian newspaper went on to declare that Armitage "did not pay heed to... the inhumane crimes committed by the Israeli troops against the Palestinian detainees."
To place the newspaper's charges in perspective, it should be noted that the Arab detainees' demands from Israel's Prison Service include such things as personal computers and cellular phones, appliances in the cell, more TV channels, no security checks for visitors, and other benefits.
"The US is usually boasting that it is the pioneer of the free world and that it is humanity's savior from injustice. Yet, when it comes to Israel, the US is just a master of words, not deeds...." Al-Gomhuriya declared.
In any case, the editorial concluded, the American administration "knows very well that the Israeli officials would never pay heed to the US... with respect to mistreating the Palestinian detainees due to the fact that the US troops also committed brutal mistakes against the Iraqi detainees in Abu Ghraib prison."
