Two Israelis were lightly wounded yesterday in separate attempted-murder attacks at the hands of Arab terrorists. The first incident was that of Eran Schwartz, in Hevron. Walking from Machpelah Cave - where he had participated in early-morning prayers - via the "Abraham's Stream" mikvah [ritual bath] site, Schwartz was suddenly surrounded by four Arabs, who attacked him with tear gas in his face and then a knife to his side. He was able to escape without additional injuries. Security forces attempted without success to locate the attackers.

Hebron youth and adults remained at the site of the stream all day, praying and partaking in traditional Shabbath meals there. Later that evening the entire community participated in a 'Melavah Malka,' [the traditional post-Shabbath meal] at the site, celebrating Schwartz's escape from death at the hands of Arab terrorists.

The second Israeli to be hurt was an IDF soldier. He was wounded yesterday afternoon during the IDF's ongoing anti-terror operation in Shechem, when Arabs hurled an explosive device at a group of soldiers in the Balata refugee slum. Israeli forces discovered a weapons-and-explosives cache in Shechem yesterday; it was the sixth such stash discovered in the past few days.

The Balata refugee camp, the largest of its type in the PA-controlled areas, was established by Jordan in 1948, and some 20,000 people currently live there. Pro-PA literature states, "In its earlier years, Balata was an enormous tent city. But as years passed, and the refugee problem experienced no resolve, permanent structures began taking root... Yet although there are some paved roads and permanent structures within Balata, the camp still faces many problems. Health care, education, and many other public and human services are dangerously lacking..." No hint is given that it is the Arab countries that have always prevented the refugee problems from being solved and the refugee camps from being dismantled. The Palestinian Authority, too, has not granted "citizenship" to the camp residents, as "having over a million people living in refugee camps brings international sympathy to the Palestinian cause."
