Matters affecting the environment in Israel got a boost in recent weeks.
The Israel Electricity Authority approved a state subsidy for electricity production using wind turbines and solar collectors. The subsidy will benefit private producers who sell electricity to Israel Electric Corporation and to private consumers via the IEC's grid. Facilities that use fossil fuel supplements (crude oil, diesel fuel, gas or coal) for less than 30% of their production will also be eligible for the subsidy, if the fossil fuel is found to be critical for the operation of those plants. The financial incentive is to encourage environmentally friendly electricity production and lessen dependence on fossil fuels.
In addition to the air, the waters of Israel will also be benefiting in the near future. The Coastline Protection Law was passed this month by the Knesset
The law, promoted under the auspices of the Environment Ministry, will provide a framework for the coastline to be safeguarded as a public asset. All future construction within 300 meters of the water line must be approved by a new inter-ministerial Coastline Protection Committee.
