The Likud Party Central Committee last night voted against ongoing efforts to include the Labor Party in a coalition government, also voting down Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s resolution to permit him to conduct talks with any Zionist party. The Prime Minister hoped his resolution would pass, thereby creating a backdoor to bypass the resolution against bringing Labor into the government.

The first resolution, presented by the party’s opposition headed by Minister Uzi Landau passed in an 843-612 vote, sending a clear message to Mr. Sharon that the party’s leadership body opposes efforts to include Labor in the government. The prime minister’s resolution was defeated by a 765-760 vote.
Labor MK Dalia Itzik, who heads the party’s coalition negotiating team, as well as Labor MK Ephraim Sneh are calling on party leaders to end coalition talks with the Likud and prepare for early elections. Itzik is calling on Labor leader Shimon Peres to confer with Shinui Party leader Minister Tommy Lapid to set a date for new elections.
