Beleaguered Yesha residents continue to face the threat of erosion of their settlement enterprise - at the hands of their government. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon signed an evacuation order of yet another settled outpost: Givat Rehavam, near Tekoa in eastern Gush Katif. The site is named in memory of murdered IDF General and Cabinet Minister Rehavam Ze'evi, who was also a personal friend of Sharon's. Several families and singles have been living in Givat Rehavam for a number of years.

Yediot Acharonot newspaper reports today that Sharon rejected last week a compromise to which the Defense Minister and IDF Chief of Staff had already agreed. The agreement would have led to a peaceful evacuation of most of the outposts and official recognition of the remainder. Sharon's rejection of this compromise therefore leaves intact the threats to such established and strategic outposts as Givat Assaf and Givat HaRoeh, which have 14-17 families each.

This past Wednesday, the Supreme Court issued a restraining order forbidding the State from expelling the residents of Givat HaRoeh, near Eli and Shilo, for at least two additional weeks. The residents say the governmental and military echelons promised them that their community would receive all the necessary permits, and that they would not have moved there otherwise. Atty. David Rotem, representing the residents, told Arutz-7 today that the Court ordered the government to explain, by August 25, why it is not honoring the agreement the residents say the government made with them.
