For the first time in ten years, a child in Israel has died of measles. A 7-year-old boy from the religious neighborhood of Givat Sha'ul in Jerusalem was hospitalized ten days ago with the disease, complicated by pneumonia. It was later learned that his parents had not given him, or his siblings, the immunization against measles. Two of his sisters, who have also begun to develop symptoms of measles, have now been given the vaccination, and are being treated at home in stable condition.
Jerusalem is undergoing an outbreak of measles, especially in the Breslover community in Meah She'arim, where 53 children have the disease. The rabbis of the community have cooperated in calling for families to vaccinate their children against measles.
