The Nigerian state of Borno has sent a delegation to Israel to study how Israel managed to transform its deserts into arable lands.
Borno’s Governor Ali Sheriff announced Saturday, during the convocation ceremony of the Borno College of Agriculture, that his government had embarked on a mission of making the desert bloom, according to AllAfrica news service.
The governor said he had initiated discussions with international organizations regarding the improvement of Borno’s crop varieties and agricultural production.
Borno, which is 50% Muslim and has a Christian minority of 40%, adopted Islamic law in 2000. The state is amidst a dispute some of its legislators have compared to Israel’s war with the Arabs of Judea, Samaria of Gaza. 33 villages in Borno’s Lake Chad area, as well as its Bakassi peninsula, are to be handed over to neighboring Cameroon, according to the Federal Nigerian government.
