Despite Israel's 27,000 lawyers, representing a high per-capita ratio of lawyers to citizens, those with legal training are still in demand in the Israeli job market. So reports Codex, the Israel Bar Association's placement company. Codex reported that the number of legal positions for attorneys has risen sharply by 55% since the beginning of this year, while the number of unemployed lawyers has dropped by 38%.
Daniella Slasky, Director of Employment for Nefesh B'Nefesh, an organization that brings North American Jews on Aliyah (immigration to Israel), reports that twelve lawyers are among those coming to Israel on this year's flights. "I never hear from those in the legal profession who came last year and the year before, " she said. "That's a good sign; it means they have found work."
During the month of July, 992 job postings for lawyers were listed by Codex, compared with 640 listings in January. Adv. Vivian Shalom of Codex is quoted in Globes as saying that the numbers indicate that most major businesses are again hiring lawyers. Shalom notes that demand is highest for lawyers with 3-4 years of experience, who speak English, and who have experience with the capital market and international deals.
