Some 150 concerned residents of Kokhav HaShachar, north of Jerusalem, held a protest on Saturday night against what they feel is a dangerous security situation in their area. In the past few days alone, there have been two roadside bombs and three rock obstacles. "A woman and her children were driving late at night," one resident said, "and suddenly they hit this line of rocks piled along the road. Their car flipped over, and they were rescued only a few minutes later when another Israeli car passed by. Thank G-d, they were not seriously hurt, but this just shows that the army is not protecting us the way it should be. True, they found the roadside bombs and safely detonated them, but we are not sufficiently protected."

Two young fathers - Gideon Lichterman, 27, and Shalom Har-Melekh, 25 - were murdered very close to the site of the protest in two separate terrorist attacks last year.

Kokhav HaShachar is located just off the north-south Alon Highway, between the Ofrah-Shilo area and the Jordan Valley, and in proximity to several Arab villages.

An assistant to the IDF regional commander told the irate residents that he would arrange a meeting between them and his boss later this week.
