It's all but official: Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom will place himself tonight at the head of the "rebels' wing" of the Likud Party. He will star and deliver the keynote speech at a large-scale political event expressing opposition to the formation of a national unity government with Labor. The event is being organized by Shalom's aides, and will take place tonight in Tel Aviv. Hundreds of Likud Central Committee members and Knesset Members, including Ministers Uzi Landau and Natan Sharansky, are expected to attend.

Despite the anti-Sharon nature of the event, its MC and chief organizer will be Eitan Sulami, who helped lead Sharon's campaign against Binyamin Netanyahu in the Likud primaries of late 2002. Sulami confirmed today that he hopes to pass the microphone to Minister Shalom in time for the evening's main newscasts. He said he feels that the "Likud does not represent its voters, not only ethnically but in other ways as well." Asked what his plans are if Sharon continues forward with his disengagement plans, Sulami said he does not fear new elections.
