In a letter sent to Orlev and released to the press, Eitam warned Orlev that his behavior will bring about the crumbling of the NRP and the party’s disappearance from the political map.
Eitam decided to send the letter after the Ministry of Infrastructure, under Minister Tzipi Livni (Likud) stopped approving mortgages for those wishing to move to Gush Katif, a move which Orlev publicly blamed on Eitam’s exit from the government.
“Attacks of this type are a proven recipe for the party’s crumbling, self-destruction and disappearance from the political map,” wrote Eitam.
The NRP Chairman then attacked Orlev’s repeated assertion that staying in the government would prevent a retreat from Gush Katif. “Israel’s political establishment is already taking concrete steps to completely suffocate the settlements and to harm them. The Prime Minister is spitting in the faces of the members of the NRP and you prefer to hide your head in the sand.”
Arutz-7’s Haggai Seri-Levi reported that Orlev responded to Eitam’s letter saying, “Eitam is preparing his alibi for when his resignation paves the way for Labor into the coalition. Throwing sand in the eyes of the public and falsely illustrating the situation with demagoguery doesn’t change the fact that Eitam’s resignation is damaging Religious Zionism, the settlement enterprise and the NRP,” said Orlev.
Minister Orlev called upon Eitam to stop the infighting and to prevent a split in the NRP, to return to the party and the coalition and to thereby prevent any further deterioration of the situation.
