"Coming out of hibernation." That's how one observer described the plan released today by the Yesha Council to fight the disengagement/withdrawal/expulsion program in the sphere of public Israeli opinion.
Correspondent Haggai Huberman reports that the plan contains several elements, all of which are marked by a substantial increase in the level of activism. Among them are a petition against the disengagement to be signed by no fewer than a million people. To this end, a personal visit to the home of every family in Israel is planned. Huberman explained, "This will of course also involve giving out stickers at intersections, booths in city centers and malls, and the revival of the task forces used in the Likud referendum vote two months ago - and all this in the course of the coming month."
The Yesha leaders feel that there is a wide-spread misconception that the disengagement is already an established fact and that the clock cannot be turned back. The goal, therefore, is to cause a turnabout in public opinion regarding the withdrawal plan. At the very least, it is hoped to make public consciousness aware that implementation of the plan has not yet been approved by the Cabinet and that it's not too late to stop it.
Another idea in the works is the formation of a human chain from Gush Katif to Jerusalem, to take place on Sunday, July 25. It is estimated that some 70,000 - 80,000 people will have to participate. Details of the human chain are already being planned, such as the names of those responsible for each section and the parking lots that will have to be available along the route.
In the political sphere, massive pressure will be placed on the National Religious Party to quit - and bring about the toppling of - the government.
