Once a year, the best chess playing computers in the world meet to compete in a world championship. From July 4th–12th Israel will host the 12th World Computer Chess Championship (WCCC). The event will be held at Bar-Ilan University in Ramat-Gan. Fourteen chess programs are registered with at least two on very fast four-processor systems.

The tournament is being organized by the International Computer Games Association (ICGA) and supported, amongst others, by the City of Ramat-Gan, Intel Israel and Israel’s Ministry of Tourism.

For the WCCC and the Olympiad the organizers are providing 36 computers with Intel Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz processor, and 512 MB of memory. Participants can install whatever they want on the machines and are allowed to bring their own hardware as well.

Earlier this year, Israel's top-ranked chess player, Boris Gelfand, was prevented from competing in the World Chess Federations championships by Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi – whose country hosted the event.
