It was released for publication yesterday that Israeli security personnel arrested Palestinian Authority officer Mowayin Atallah, 39, on June 4. Atallah, whose position gave him extensive access to the Karni crossing as well as knowledge of security procedures there, helped two suicide bombers sneak past Israeli security toward Ashdod, where they blew themselves up at the port. The attack, on March 14 of this year, killed ten Israelis.

The PA officer admitted to investigators that he has assisted Hamas and the al-Aksa Martyrs Brigades in smuggling the two terrorist bombers into Ashdod. He also said that Hamas had planned to use his assistance to carry out a double suicide attack in an Israeli city just days after the Ashdod attack, but that the plan was cancelled after the Karni crossing was closed.

Another plot Atallah admitted to taking part in was the planned creation of a truck company that would utilize false-bottoms to smuggle terrorists underneath goods transported through the Karni crossing. The two terrorists who carried out the attack on the Ashdod port hid in a false side-wall of a shipping container.

Atallah told investigators that terror groups view Karni as a weak link in Israeli security. He said that the volume of commerce between Israel and the PA makes thorough security checks nearly impossible.
