The director general of the Tourism Ministry, Aharon Domb, noted today (Thursday) that "if the average of tourist arrivals over the first five months of this year is maintained, we can expect to reach a total of 1,400,000 tourists for the year 2004."

During the first five months of the year, 551,900 tourist arrivals were recorded – an increase of 75% over the same period last year and 64 percent more than in the corresponding period in 2002. Of this figure, 490,200 tourists arrived by air – an increase of 70% over the same period last year - and 60,200 tourists entered Israel by land – more than twice the number in the parallel period last year - while another 1,500 tourists came by sea.

In May alone, 118,200 tourists entered Israel, representing a 43% increase over last May and almost double the figure for May 2002, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics and the Tourism Ministry.

The data breakdown for May of this year reveals that 105,300 arrived by air (35% more than in May 2003), 12,500 entered by land (almost triple the number for May 2003) and another 400 tourists came by sea. An interesting statistic is that of those tourists arriving by direct flight to Eilat, 75% were from France, the same as in the 2002/2003 season.
