A lone suicide bomber on Monday night detonated an explosive device at a bout 7:30pm in the Binyamina train station located between Tel Aviv and Haifa in the Pardes Chana area.
Due to the heavy security presence in the busy train station that includes inspections of all bags, the terrorist was unable to enter the actual train station and therefore detonated his deadly blast just outside the station packed with commuters during the evening rush hour.
Police Commander Borovsky stated the bomb seems to have contained about twenty kilograms (44 pounds) of explosives as well as fragments but he declined to detail at this time. In the past, terrorist packed bombs with steel nails and metallic balls to maximize the devastation of the blast.
Emergency medical service personnel report eight victims of the blast were transported to the emergency room of Hadera’s Hillel Yafeh Hospital. Hospital officials report seven victims and one person that died of wounds sustained in the blast. At least two of the victims are in serious condition. Another fatality of the attack, a female, was reported dead on the scene immediately following the explosion.
The Hillel Yafeh Hospital hotline number from anywhere in the country is 12-55-166. Binyamina Council officials have established a hotline number that is accessible from inside the municipality. One may dial ‘106’.
Police forces assisted by aerial units are involved in a manhunt for the suspected driver that brought the terrorist to the Binyamina station. The driver being sought is a female that was wearing a head covering, driving a green 1987 or 1988 Fiat Uno. The driver disappeared in the predominately Arab Wadi Ara section of the country.
Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer has been conferring with senior officials since the blast and a military response is expected in the very near future.
