The Tel Aviv Police Department (TAPD) has replaced its traditional two-way radio communication systems in its cars with something new: a computer and a wireless modem in each of its 130 patrol cars. On the computer screen appear the various missions underway at the time, as well as which cars have been called to which scene. Details of arrestees can be checked on-line, and communications will no longer be overheard by thousands of amateur radio operators. In addition, the system includes a way to locate each of the cars at any given second. If both policemen are out of the car at once, the station manager back at the base can see that the computer is "closed," and then initiates traditional radio contact with them until they return to the car.
