Some 600,000 junior high school, high school, and upper-school (grades 13 and 14) did not study today, nor will they study tomorrow, due to a strike by 40,000 of their teachers in the Irgun HaMorim teachers union. The teachers claim that their pay has been unacceptably eroded over the past three years. A second teachers union, the Histadrut HaMorim, has also decided to join the strike, but because they did not announce a wage-dispute until today, they will not be able to begin their strike until two weeks from now. The latter group intends to utilize these two weeks to petition the Labor Courts for redress of the salary erosion, as well as to conduct public protests.
