Capt. Shahar Ben-Yeshai, 25, of Menahemiya was killed yesterday by an Arab sniper in Shechem (Nablus). A bullet hit him in the side of his chest between the plates of his ceramic vest, killing him almost instantly as he was concluding a search operation in Shechem. He will be buried this afternoon near his hometown in Tiberias.

Commander of an elite unit of the 101 Paratrooper Battalion, Ben-Yeshai began his army service in 1996; after completing his compulsory service, he was asked to remain and sign on as a career officer. Battalion head Lt.-Col. Itzik Bar described him as an outstanding and charismatic officer, a "model commander who introduced new standards of professionalism and concern for his soldiers that were nothing short of a revolution... Scores of terrorist attacks have been foiled by Shahar's platoon since the beginning of the year." Survived by his parents and three sisters, Shahar was to have begun studying law at Tel Aviv University in October, after receiving a scholarship from the army.

A student of the Breslover "Shuvu Banim" yeshiva, 24 years old, was stabbed and lightly injured yesterday as he made his way to the Western Wall for Sabbath afternoon prayers. The attack occurred on Haggai St., in what is known as the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City. The victim continued to the nearby police position, where he received preliminary medical care, and he was then transported to a local hospital. After a search of the area, a suspect was taken into custody - reportedly, a Bedouin Arab from the Negev.

An Israel Air Force attack on Friday night resulted in the killing of two top Hamas terrorists, including Wael Nasser, 31, who has been engaged in murderous terrorist activities against Israel for at least nine years. An air-to-surface missile killed the two terrorists as they were riding on a motorcycle in the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City. Both Nasser and his dead accomplice were planning further attacks against Israel for the coming days. Nasser, who bore chief responsibility for the Kassam-launching project in Gaza, was also behind the suicide attack in Erez in January of this year (four Israelis killed), the Atzmona pre-military yeshiva attack in March 2002 (five students dead), the Mike's Place bombing in April 2003 (three Israeli deaths), and many other attacks involving at least two other deaths.

IDF Central Region Commander Maj.-Gen. Moshe Kaplinsky issued certificates of appreciation to two Nahal Hareidi unit soldiers for preventing a suicide bombing attack in the Jordan Valley area on May 22. The attempted attack occurred when the Bekaot Checkpoint commander noticed a suspicious figure approaching the checkpoint while wearing a jacket on a hot day. Firing his weapon in the air, the soldier ordered the suspect to stop - whereupon the Arab blew himself up, moderately wounding one Arab nearby, as well as causing light injuries to other Arabs and one soldier.
