The weeklong event is sponsored by the American Jewish Congress' Council for World Jewry, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Tourism and the Konrad Adenauer foundation. Most of the sessions are taking place in the Jerusalem Municipality Building at Safra Square.
This morning's sessions dealt with "The Role of the Mayor in Times of Crisis," in a panel discussion format with Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupoliansky. Following a discussion on "Disaster Preparedness And Emergency Response," the mayors toured Hadassah University Medical Center's trauma department and emergency facilities. They were then scheduled to visit the Old City and some of its holy sites.
Other events scheduled for this week are an Emergency Services panel with Jerusalem Police Chief Mickey Levy, a visit to Yad Vashem, a tree planting ceremony, and more. Among the visiting mayors are those of Matola, Mozambique; Lodz, Poland; Mendoza, Argentina; Tbilisi, Georgia; Cleveland, Ohio; Hempstead, New York; Billings, Montana; Hamm and Erfurt, Germany; and more.
