The Bush Administration continues to try to appease both Israel and the Arabs. On Thursday, Secretary of State Colin Powell told Jordan's King Abdullah that he believes Prime Minister Sharon's plan to uproot Jewish communities from "occupied territories," in his words, will proceed, and that this represents the best chance for the establishment of a Palestinian state. On the other hand, President Bush told an Egyptian newspaper over the weekend that he has not withdrawn the assurances he gave Prime Minister Sharon, and that he no longer sees a PLO state arising in the year 2005, as called for in the Road Map. "I think the timetable of 2005 isn't as realistic as it was two years ago," Bush told Al-Ahram. "Nevertheless, I do think we ought to push hard as fast as possible to get a state in place."
