The intense assault lasted more than half-an-hour, even as IDF artillery fire was immediately directed at Hizbullah positions and targets in southern Lebanon.

One IDF soldier was killed in the attack, with several others sustaining injuries during the battle. Among them, two soldiers are listed in serious condition, two others - moderate, and an unspecified number of other soldiers were lightly wounded and treated on the scene.

The battle - involving artillery, gunfire, Israeli helicopter gunships and two IAF bombing sorties into Lebanon - continued until approximately 7:00AM. By late morning, a tense quiet prevailed along the northern border. Metullah Mayor Kobi Katz reports that life in the northern border community continued uninterrupted.

Speaking to IDF Radio this morning, Vice Prime Minister Ehud Olmert stated that Israel's response along the northern border will be restrained in order to avoid an escalation in Hizbullah hostilities. Olmert indicated that as long as the fighting is contained to Har Dov and border outpost areas, the Israeli response will be guarded.

The escalation, however, began two days ago, when Hizbullah attackers fired anti-aircraft missiles over northern Israeli communities. Israeli Air Force planes responded by bombing Hizbullah targets in Lebanon. The following day, IDF soldiers in the north foiled an attempted terrorist infiltration and attack by several Hizbullah terrorists. The soldiers opened fire and the would-be terrorists fled deeper into Lebanese territory.
