Less than an hour after the beginning of Memorial Day commemorations last night, Palestinian terrorists fired at a Border Guard vehicle on patrol near Hevron - killing one and wounding three. The Border Guard policeman who was killed was Sgt. Yaniv Mashiach, 20, of Jaffa. He was laid to rest today, Memorial Day, in the Holon Military Cemetery.

The murderous attack was perpetrated by the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades of Arafat's Fatah. A car carrying three terrorists overtook the security jeep at Idna Junction, and the terrorists opened fire, felling one Israeli with a shot to the head. The targeted Israelis returned fire at the fleeing vehicle, and then continued to the Tarkumiya Checkpoint where medical personnel began treating the wounded.

Less than an hour later, several kilometers to the north, more Palestinian terrorists of the Fatah gang fired at an Arab watchman. The attack occurred in the industrial zone of Efrat, near Kibbutz Migdal Oz in Gush Etzion. The victim was hit by three bullets and was transported in serious condition by an Efrat paramedic unit to the trauma unit of Jerusalem's Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital.

In addition to last night's two attacks against Israelis, Fatah did not ignore its own home front, murdering a suspected Arab informant in the village of Beit Rima, near Ramallah.

In yet another Palestinian terrorist attack last night, an Israeli motorist escaped with his life in a multiple firebomb attack near Yitzhar in the Shomron. Three incendiary devices were hurled at his vehicle by Arab attackers, but he was unhurt.

Security forces remain on heightened alert throughout the country as terror organizations seek to perpetrate a major attack. The closure on PA residents is still in force, and they are barred from crossing into pre-1967 Israel. IDF troops operating in Judea and Samaria arrested five Arab terror suspects during the night.
