Journalists have been making the news lately, entering the fray rather than reporting from the sidelines.
Israel Radio reported that a CNN camera crew was detained for questioning by police today after they were spotted approaching the Dimona nuclear plant today (Tuesday).
Security officials at the plant have filed a police complaint against the four CNN crew-members. Police suspected the camera crew of attempting to film the nuclear facility and confiscated the crew's filmed footage.
Last week, a correspondent for the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera television station was indicted in an IDF military court. The reporter, Dib Abu Zayad, was arrested three months ago for serving as a liaison between the Fatah terror group in Lebanon and terrorist groups in the P.A. Abu Zayad made use of his credentials as a journalist to smuggle money and weapons from Lebanon to terrorists in the P.A.
A recent move requiring foreign journalists to receive clearance from the General Security Service (GSS) in order to receive a foreign press card was met with strong opposition by the hundreds of foreign journalists in Israel.
Following the recent surgical strikes upon the Hamas leadership, the IDF has issued a directive barring journalists with Israeli citizenship from entering Gaza. Due to intelligence information, the IDF has also announced that security checks will include thorough examinations of the press as well.
“Due to the security situation, the security checks … will be tightened and may take longer than usual. You are advised to allow more time when entering or leaving Gaza,” read an email sent out by the Government Press Office to members of the press. “We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding.”
Security officials are also warning of concrete intelligence information regarding the targeting of Israeli and foreign journalists in Shechem (Nablus) and Gaza.
