Doctors in Soroka Hospital in Be\'er Sheva are fighting to save the life of an IDF soldier who was seriously wounded in a battle last night near Rafiach. He was hit in the head with shrapnel when Arafat\'s Force 17 gunmen attempted to prevent the army from destroying buildings used by Palestinian snipers. The Israelis stormed the southern Gaza border outpost, wounded four Arabs there, and took the equipment. A second Israeli soldier was moderately wounded - he was operated on in his eye - and a third is in light condition.
After meeting with the PA\'s Abu Ala, Foreign Minister Shimon Peres reported yesterday that Arafat gave clear orders on Saturday night to stop the violence against Israel. Peres said that the results might not be visible right away, however. In fact, Palestinian Authority para-military police fired at an IDF patrol near Psagot this afternoon; no one was hurt, and the Israelis did not fire back... Also this afternoon, Palestinians threw Molotov cocktails at the Jewish Community in Hevron; no one was hurt… Arabs fired mortar shells at the town of Netzarim in Gaza last night; no one was hurt... South of Tapuach, between Binyamin and Shomron, Arabs fired at Israeli soldiers, who returned fire... Another Hizbullah-style roadside explosive was discovered late this morning on the road between Kedumim and Shavei Shomron, west of Shechem. IDF sappers safely exploded it.
During the five weeks since Arafat ordered a ceasefire, his forces have perpetrated 348 attacks, leaving 13 Israelis dead and 64 wounded. On June 2, international media reported that Yasser Arafat had ordered his forces to immediately halt all violence against Israel. In the past week alone, however, the ZOA notes that there were 52 attacks, in which four people were killed and 14 were wounded. The list of 52 unprovoked attacks includes fatal shootings, dozens of grenades, roadside bombs, mortar shells in Gaza, ambush and drive-by shootings, and more.
In general, security authorities are warning of a new wave of terror attacks, including car and suicide bombings. Car-bomb warnings at Ben-Gurion International Airport continue to cause major traffic disruptions on the highways in the vicinity of the airport. Beefed-up security precautions at the airport entrances include checking the identity of every passenger and looking through the trunk and interior of the car. Passengers have been asked to either use early check-in services or else arrive up to four hours before flight time.
Residents of Ma\'aleh Hever in the Southern Har Hevron area blocked the main north-south highway in their area to Arab traffic. They were protesting the roadside bomb that killed Capt. Shai Shalom Cohen two nights ago.
