Sayif Al-Islam Kaddafi, son of Libyan ruler Muammar Kaddafi, told an Egyptian newspaper last month that he wants the Jews from Libya currently living in Israel to return to "their ancestral homeland" of Libya - on condition that they leave their property in Israel to the Arabs.
Sayif Al-Islam (whose name means "the sword of Islam") said, "I believe that every Arab state that will do so [invite Jews to return], will take part in one way or another in the partial solution of the Palestinian problem." Kaddafi estimated there were 30,000 expatriate Libyan Jews around the world.
Kaddafi made similar comments to Qatari reporters last month: "It is a responsibility to invite Libyan Jews, including from Israel... to return to Libya, their ancestral land, and to abandon the land they acquired from the Palestinians."
Libyan ruler Muammar Kaddafi made similar comments, as reported by Arabic media in January of this year, that he is ready to compensate Libyan Jews whose properties were confiscated by the North African state. At the time, he also said he is prepared to allow Libyans to travel to Israel.
In the recent interview with Al-Ahram Al-Arabi, Sayif Al-Islam Kaddafi also said his personal view is that the Libyan Jews who had property confiscated in the past should receive compensation. He sees, he declared, Libyan Jews as equal citizens in every way.
As for the state of Israel, the young Kaddafi stated, "Until a short time ago, we were in a state of conflict and hostilities with Israel, but things have changed."
According to Kaddafi, as the principal confrontation states with Israel (Egypt, Jordan and Syria) have begun talks or have treaties with Israel, they are benefiting. Libya, he said, "which is not a confrontation state, continues to pay the price. [The neighboring Arab states] derive benefit and we are paying the price."
As for the PLO, Sayif Al-Islam claimed, "The Palestinians, whom we used to support with weapons and military equipment, have begun to refuse that and ask instead for economic aid in order to build infrastructure and industrial projects."
