Capt. Shai Shalom Cohen, 22, of Pardes Chana (near Hadera), was killed by a remote-control operated bomb late last night in South Har Hevron. Capt. Cohen, the deputy commander of a Shimshon unit company, was traveling in a non-bulletproof jeep between Adurayim and Otniel when Arabs, observing from afar, detonated the roadside explosive. He died of his wounds this morning in Soroka Hospital in Be\'er Sheva. His family has asked that the funeral, to be held late this afternoon in Pardes Chana, not be covered by the media. IDF bulldozers uprooted a row or two of trees and took down stone walls that had been used by terrorists for camouflage, and re-imposed a strong closure on the nearby Arab villages.
A second soldier was lightly wounded. IDF sources say that the method of attack was very similar to that used by Hizbullah in southern Lebanon.
Police now classify the death of Petach Tikvah resident Eliyahu Ne’eman, who was shot and killed by Arabs near the Green Line around Baka el-Garbiye five days ago, as a terrorist attack. They had originally called it a criminal murder, noting that he had had dealings with PA residents. The fatal shots were fired from the Tul Karem area towards the victim’s car.
