The recommendation of the State Prosecutor's Office was leaked more than a week ago, but went unreported by any national media – save Arutz-7 – and was kept under wraps until after PMO director Dov Weisglass returned from Washington with an April date for the meeting between US President Bush and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. This delay in publication by national media allowed the PMO maneuvering room in negotiating a meeting between President Bush and Prime Minister Sharon; a meeting that is believed will have a great impact on the acceptance of the Prime Minister's unilateral "disengagement" plan for Gaza among government ministers and the Israeli public.
Now that the information has been publicized in all Israeli and international media, senior Republicans in the US are exerting great last-minute efforts to have the planned meeting postponed until after Attorey General Menachem Mazouz makes his formal and final recommendation regarding indictments against Prime Minister Sharon. Republican officials are worried about holding a presidential meeting at this time for a lame-duck Israeli Prime Minister whose policies are also contrary to those advocated by conservative Jews and Christians in key electoral states.
