Prime Minister Sharon has asked the Justice Ministry to prepare a working paper for the evacuation of, and compensation to, the nearly 8,000 Jewish residents of Gaza - even before the withdrawal plan has been submitted to the Knesset and Cabinet for approval. "Would you ever agree to prepare a working paper for the evacuation of the thousands of Arabs in Um el-Fahm?" railed out MK Nissan Slomiansky (NRP) today. He was addressing Justice Ministry Director-General Abramovitch during a Knesset Law Committee session on the legal aspects of Prime Minister Sharon's planned unilateral withdrawal from Gaza. "How can you prepare a plan that stands in blatant contrast to the Basic Law on Human Rights and Dignity?"

Abramovitch told the MKs that he planned to meet with the residents - arousing scorn from MK Uri Ariel (National Union): "There's something very honorable about the hangman wanting to meet with his victims to discuss how they want to be hanged," he said. Likud MK Yuli Edelstein said it's inconceivable that an official committee should be established to prepare for something that is illegal.

Arutz-7's Tamar Leshem reports that MK Nissim Ze'ev of Shas was also scornful of the plan: "Will the communities be destroyed, or will they be sold to the PA?" he asked with derision. Abramovitch did not respond. Another question by the MK - "Do you believe that it will be possible to expel the residents?" - also went unanswered.

From the other end of the political spectrum, MK Ophir Pines (Labor) asked, "Are the members of the committee to evacuate settlers prepared for the legal aspects of this plan? I ask this in light of the fact that the settlers are really giving the State a lesson regarding the outposts, with all their court suits and the like." Abramovitch responded that his committee is prepared for lawsuits and appeals to the Supreme Court.

Attending the session was Orit Strook of Hevron, who has taken upon herself the responsibility for Jewish civil rights in Judea, Samaria and Gaza.
