We may never know, but it could be that pleas by Ida Nudel, Yosef Mendlevitch, and Atty. Nitzana Darshan-Leitner helped save the life of an Arab informant. Taher Jaber of Jenin was arrested by the Palestinian Preventive Security Service last month, accused of having assisted the Israeli army in killing two PA terrorists several weeks earlier. Another terrorist, even more urgently wanted by Israel, escaped injury in the attack. At the time of the arrest, the PA said that it would carry out the sentence immediately after the trial - and based on previous PA precedent, it was expected that Jaber would be sentenced to death.
Six months ago, the Palestinian Authority executed two informants in front of cheering crowds of thousands. Atty. Leitner offered at the time to represent them in their trials free of charge. This morning, she turned publicly to GSS head Avi Dichter, in the name of her clients former Russian refuseniks Nudel and Mendlevitch, asking that he do everything he can to save Jaber\'s life: \"It is unthinkable that the GSS should offer these people a few hundred dollars and then totally abandon them to their fate.\"
Possibly in reaction to this call, it was reported early this afternoon that the trial had ended - and that Jaber was sentenced not to death, but to life imprisonment with hard labor.
